Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities
ScheduleIndividuals living with intellectual and developmental disabilities often struggle with co-occurring mental health diagnoses. Additionally, these individuals may have experienced bullying, abuse or neglect resulting in trauma. Finding a therapist who understands the complexities of those living with disabilities is both challenging and stressful to loved ones.
At Therapeutic Oasis, we have clinicians experienced in working with people of different abilities. Our therapists will work with clients and families to achieve goals appropriate for their intellectual and developmental range. The ultimate goal is to help each client find a sense of joy and independence within the least restrictive environment.
According to The Arc, intellectual disability is a below-average cognitive ability with the following characteristics:
- Intelligent quotient (or I.Q.) is between 70-75 or below
- Significant limitations in adaptive behaviors (the ability to adapt and carry on everyday life activities such as self-care, socializing, communicating, etc.)
- The onset of the disability occurs before age 18.
The term developmental disability is a broader term that incorporates both intellectual and physical disabilities. Developmentally delayed individuals may or may not have a low IQ. Specific conditions are typically present at birth or develop before the age of 18. This can include specific learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, genetic disorders, chromosome disorders, etc.
